Family Portraits

Personally, nothing is more important to us than family, which is why our family sessions are one of our favorite session types. No two families are the same and we love seeing the different dynamics and personalities within each one.

We recommend booking your family session 4-6 weeks in advance. Prior to booking make sure you pick a date and time that works best for each of your family members. We have the largest outdoor studio facility here at Trail Dust Town, offering our clients 10-acres of natural backgrounds for their portrait session.

At Silhouette Photography, when we photograph a family session our end goal is your wall. We offer some digital options, however, we are artists as much as we are photographers and take pride in producing quality prints that are the best reflection of our work. Before your session, some important questions to think about are: where do you plan to put or hang the portraits in your home, what size photograph will look best there, what colors are in that room and to what friends and family do you plan to give photographs to?

What to Wear: When planning for your family portraits coordination is so important. Personally, we think jewel tones and darker solid colors look the best on all skin tones and shapes. We recommend avoiding white or light colors. The lighter colors have a tendency to wash out even darker skin tones. It also draws attention away from your face.
Many families choose to dress the same from head-to-toe. A black shirt and blue jeans is a classic go-to because most people have these items already in their closet; it’s easy. This clothing choice also allows you to be the main focus in your portraits, not your outfits. When looking at the finished photograph, your eye will more easily go to everyone’s face rather than your clothing.

Another option for clothing that is modern and popular is to color coordinate with your family. This can be trickier, but when pulled off well it looks stunning. With this look, select a color palette consisting of 2-3 colors and carry them throughout everyone’s outfits and accessories to add interest. It is important not to go too overboard with colors and patterns. We recommend selecting one neutral tone and accessorizing it with 1-2 more colors; pattern should also be limited to only a few pieces of clothing.

Remember, layers and accessories add texture and dimension to the portraits helping to add richness and detail. It is incredibly warm in southern Arizona, so consider necklaces, earrings, ties, vests and hats.
